Are engineers born or are they made? Around here, we like to think the answer is both! While some students come to us having dreamed of this career since they were just hip high, others didn’t discover engineering until well into high school.
Through years of working with students of many ages, we’ve observed that your success as an engineer is less about “when” and more about “why.” If you identify with these key traits, you just may be destined for engineering.
1. You like to solve problems.
Give you a challenge, and you’ll take it on like a champ. That’s a key component of engineering. Whether you’re optimizing processes, designing new products, or enhancing existing systems, you’ll need to break down complex problems into manageable parts, applying both analytical and creative thinking.
2. You’re curious as a cat.
You can’t help it, can you? Your brain is wired to constantly ask “why” and “how.” Whether it’s taking apart gadgets or diving head-first into complex problems, your inquisitive nature will serve you well as an engineer.
3. You and STEM are like PB and J.
You never understood how some people dreaded math and science classes—they’re the best! They offer a chance to geek out with the periodic table or unravel complicated equations. (Bonus points if you were a mathlete or involved in your school’s science fair!)
4. You’re a natural innovator.
Are you constantly thinking outside the box, dreaming up new ideas, and finding better ways to do things? So are engineers in the pulp and paper industry! The companies in this space are all about pushing boundaries and making the world a more awesome place.
5. You keep up with the latest in technology.
Engineers rely on high-tech machinery to make innovation possible. If you’re into gadgets and gizmos, there will be no shortage in an engineering career. In fact, you may get a front row seat to their evolution.
If any (or all) of these signs sound like you, then you may have a bright engineering future ahead of you! And guess what? The Pulp and Paper Foundation is here to support you every step of the way. We’re committed to helping aspiring engineers like you unlock your full potential and make a real impact on the world.
