Fall is an exciting time at UMaine! A new semester is underway, and it also signals the start of our annual fall interview sessions. Each year, companies from all over the US visit campus to meet with engineering students and hold interviews for co-ops, internships, and full-time positions. The UMPPF team takes care of the schedules and logistics so students can focus on what matters most: nailing the interview.
Interviews can feel nerve-wracking, but the right preparation makes all the difference. With a little practice, you can walk in feeling confident and ready to show industry leaders why you are the right fit for the job.
Here are our top tips for making your interview a success:
1. Know Your Audience
Before your interview, research the company. What products do they make? What’s their role in the industry? What values do they emphasize? This shows genuine interest and helps you connect your skills to their needs. It also shows you took the time to do your research. We’ve added links to each of our corporate members’ websites here so you can easily learn more about them.
Bonus points: Check their latest news releases or social media posts. You might find a cool topic or initiative worth mentioning.
2. Perfect Your Elevator Pitch
Interviewers meet many students in a short period of time. Be ready to briefly explain who you are, what you’re studying, your strengths, and what excites you about engineering. Keep it conversational but confident.
3. Practice, Practice, Practice
Run through common interview questions with a friend, mentor, UMPPF staff member, or in front of the mirror. Practice telling short, clear stories that highlight skills such as teamwork, problem-solving, leadership, and adaptability.
4. Show Enthusiasm
The pulp and paper industry is full of innovation, from sustainable packaging to cutting-edge automation. Demonstrating excitement for these opportunities sets you apart. A curious, engaged candidate always makes a lasting impression.
5. Dress the Part
An interview is the time to present yourself professionally. Clean, polished attire shows both respect for the opportunity and confidence in yourself.
6. Prepare Questions
When asked, “Do you have any questions for us?” the answer should always be yes! Consider asking about team culture, what a typical day looks like, or even about the interviewer’s own career path. Thoughtful questions show genuine engagement.
7. Follow Up
After your interview, send a short thank-you. Mention something specific from your conversation that stuck with you. This simple gesture leaves a positive impression and shows appreciation for the interviewer’s time.
